Truth is the defence to defamation, says lawyer
Former Yukon College instructor Charles Stuart has filed a defamation lawsuit against a student who, in a Facebook post, alleged he had sexually assaulted her. Yukon News interviewed law alumnus Allen Mendelsohn, BCL’01, LLB’01, LLM’11, who teaches in internet technology and privacy law at the Faculty of Law.

You are not your DNA
DNA genealogy services made the headlines recently when detectives were able to use this technology to identify the culprit in the notorious cold case of the Golden State Killer. Some warn that such services compromise privacy. Bartha Maria Knoppers, LLB’78, BCL’81, professor of law in McGill’s Faculty of Medicine, weights in and puts fears of “genetic discrimination” into perspective.

Julie Payette is a spectacular Governor General

“It has been disappointing to see some of the recent media attention directed at Julie Payette in her role as governor general,” law alumnus Richard W. Pound writes in the Montreal Gazette. “Payette’s appointment to the role, just over a year ago, by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, was an inspired nomination of a great Canadian, in recognition of her many — and extraordinary — accomplishments in fields unfamiliar to most of us,” he continues.

Rohingya : ce que le Canada peut faire dès maintenant

« Malgré la déportation de centaines de milliers de civils et des allégations de génocide et de nettoyage ethnique, le peuple Rohingya s’est jusqu’à maintenant vu refuser l’accès à la justice. Un processus de réflexion créatif et novateur initié par la Cour pénale internationale (CPI) pourrait changer la donne. Le Canada dispose d’une opportunité unique de jouer dans la cour des grands et de s’engager de façon indélébile et durable en faveur de la justice pour un peuple qui le mérite désespérément. »
