Forte présence mcgilloise au Gala du Barreau du Québec

La pandémie ayant empêché le gala en présentiel l’année dernière, le gala de cette année, qui se tenait le 16 novembre, a célébré les récipiendaires de la désignation Ad E des cohortes de 2020 et de 2021.

Sur les 27 récipiendaires de 2021, non moins de huit figurent parmi les membres de notre communauté diplômée :  Maria Rita Battaglia, BCL’89, LLB’89; Danielle Chalifoux, LLM’99; Nancy Cleman, BSc’77, BCL’81, LLB’81; Irwin Cotler, OC, OQ, BA’61, BCL’64, LLD’19; Hugo Cyr, BCL’97, LLB’97; Sharon Druker, BCL’85, LLB’85; Bernard Duhaime, BCL’98, LLB’98; et le doyen Robert Leckey, BCL/LLB’02.

Lors de la cérémonie, le Prix Justice Pro Bono 2021 a été remis à Ann Soden, Ad E, BCL’81, LLB’82; tandis que le Prix Paris-Québec 2021 est allé à David Roberge, BCL’01, LLB’02.

De surcroît, nous sommes ravis de partager que Joshua Blatt, BCL/JD’21, s’est classé au premier rang dans le cadre des examens de l’École du Barreau pour l’année 2021.

Bravo to Larissa Parker, BCL/JD’21, whose essay on “Beyond Non-Justiciability for Public Interest Climate Litigation” won silver at the 2021 Global Climate Law Governance Student Essay Competition.

Nicole Spadotto, BCL/JD’21, won the Canadian Bar Association Bill Miller Memorial Award for her article, written with Kenneth Jull, “Digital Advertising and Purchasing: Fun or a New Type of Deception?” (CCLR Volume 33, No. 1)

Professor Shauna Van Praagh and Eliza Bateman, LLM’15, DCL’19, published “Becoming a University Educator: Teaching Tomorrow’s Law Teachers,” an article about the Faculty of Law’s Legal Education Seminar in the Spring 2020 edition of the Journal of Legal Education (vol. 69, no. 3).

On 2 November, Samuel Singer, BCL/LLB’09, LLM’11, published “Quebec must reverse course on Bill 2 and restore January’s historic trans rights victory,” in the Globe & Mail.

In the federal cabinet formed on 26 October, Professor David Lametti, BCL’89, LLB’89, was re-appointed as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, while Marc Miller, BCL’01, LLB’01, was appointed Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations, and.

On 26 October, Professor Alicia Hinarejos welcomed back Joshua Krane, BCL/LLB’08, to her class Government Control of Business to discuss Canadian competition law and big tech.

Lisa Shemie, BCL’94, LLB’94 was named General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at OANDA in October.

On 21 October, Woods LLP announced that Sarah Woods, BCL/LLB’03, was selected to become a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. This honorary organization of lawyers, judges, and legal scholars have demonstrated through their careers their outstanding dedication to the highest principles of the legal profession.

On 18 October, McGill University’s Board of Governors announced that Samuel Minzberg, BCL’73, LLB’79, would be named a governor emeritus effective 1 July 2022.

Jennifer Dibblee, BCL/LLB’90, was appointed Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary of BDC, the Business Development Bank of Canada, in October.

Tamara Thermitus, Ad E, LLM’13, publie dans La Presse, le 30 septembre un texte intitulé «Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation: Le devoir de mémoire ».

On 22 September, Ma’n H. Zawati, DCL’19, published a book, “Reciprocity in Populatino Biobanks,” based on his DCL thesis. It proposes a reconceived duty to inform for researchers that is more meaningful for research participants and research.

Norman M. Steingberg, BCL’75, was appointed to the Board of Directors of Atco on 1 September. He is Vice-Chair of BFL Canada and sits on the board of BFL Canada, Dorel Industries, Fiera Capital, and he chairs the McGill University Health Centre Foundation, co-chairs Women in Governance, and is involved in various other organizations.

In September, Marko Pavliha, DCL’92, was awarded the Golden Plaque from the International Maritime Law Institute. This award is given for exceptional contributions to the development of scientific, pedagogical or artistic endeavours, and for strengthening the reputation of the University of Ljubljana, where Marko Pavliha is a professor.
