Dès la semaine de relâche, on pouvait admirer les trophées remportés lors des concours Gale et Mignault dans le bureau du doyen.
Les équipes de plaidoiries de la Faculté rapportent une belle brochette de trophées, notamment en s’emparant des premières places au Laskin, au Mignault et à la Coupe Guérin. Bravo à tous et toutes!

Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition – April 1-2, 2016
McGill’s Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL) Team won the North American Round of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition, where it competed against 11 other schools, mainly from the US. The competition took place in Washington, DC.
The McGill Team successfully mooted over two days and won each and every match it participated in. The final round was judged by Senior Counsels of NASA and Lockheed Martin. In addition, team member Aram Daniel Kerkonian won the best oralist award and our memorials were graded to have the overall highest score amongst all competing teams.
The Team is composed of Aram Daniel Kerkonian, Ted Adam Newsome, and Julius Dunton. Maria Manoli, research assistant at the IASL, coached the team and Professor Ram Jakhu acted as the Faculty Advisor. The McGill Team will now compete in the International Finals, representing North America, against the winners of the European, Asia-Pacific and African rounds, in Guadalajara, Mexico, in September 2016. The Final competition will be judged by three sitting judges of the International Court of Justice.
Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot – 18-24 March 2016
The McGill team, composed of Joshua Crowe, Nicole Dunbar, Beth Mountford and Fortunat Nadima distinguished itself admirably by advancing to round 32 (the only university representing Canada to do so) of the top-tier elimination rounds. After an excellent performance by the McGill team and a too-close-to-call contest, McGill was forced to bow out to this year’s eventual second-place team, Singapore Management University.
McGill thus tied for 17th place with 16 other universities and law faculties across the world, ranking among the top 5 % of the 311 teams that participated in this moot. Mr. Crowe and Ms. Dunbar also earned an honourable mention for their advocacy skills, an award granted to only the top 4-5 % or so of the approximately 1200 pleaders at the moot.
The 2015-2016 McGill Vis team was coached by Mtre. Bogdan-Alexandru Dobrota (BCL/LLB ’11 and Vis Alumni 2010) a litigation and arbitration lawyer at Woods LLP in Montreal, Mtre. Martin Doe (B. Sc. ’04, B.C.L./LL.B. ’08 and Vis Alumni 2007), Senior Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, and by McGill Professor Geneviève Saumier.
La Coupe Davies – 5 et 6 mars 2016
This year, Stephen Albers, Emily Hutchison, Max Zidel and McLean Ayearst competed in the Davies Cup. Ultimately, the team took home second prize overall after a tough battle in the finals.
Stephen Albers writes: “We had the great honour of representing McGill at this year’s Davies Corporate and Securities Law Moot. The problem this year focussed on four distinct issues surrounding hostile takeovers: a somewhat underdeveloped area in Canadian law. The competition afforded us the opportunity to hone our abilities as researchers, writers, and ultimately as pleaders. Additionally, we had the added benefit of developing our own group dynamic — a natural consequence of late nights spent eating pizza and developing arguments!
The team thanks coaches Francesca Taddeo (BCL/LLB’15), Christopher Maughan (BCL/LLB’12) and Fred Enns (BCL/LLB’87) for their support and guidance throughout the process. They are also grateful to Jakub Adamski (BCL/LLB’02), Karine Chênevert and Graham Splawski (BCL/LLB’14) for taking time out of their schedules to help them prepare for the competition.
Le Concours Laskin – 4 et 5 mars 2016
La Faculté de droit de McGill a décroché la première place au classement général du concours de plaidoirie Laskin, qui se tenait cette année à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique.
Les deux équipes de McGill se sont affrontées en ronde finale, repartant ainsi avec les prix des meilleurs tandems de plaideurs (Thomas Touchie et Myriam Lahmidi – 1er prix; Sandrine Raquepas et Michel Bélanger-Roy – 2e prix). Thomas Touchie reçoit également le prix du 2e meilleur plaideur. En outre, les mémoires de l’équipe ont obtenu une mention de 4e rang. L’équipe est reconnaissante d’avoir pu profiter des conseils de Me Richard Vachon, Me Samuel Bachand et de Me Audrey Bourassa, qui ont agi comme entraîneurs.
Le Laskin est un concours bilingue de plaidoirie en droit administratif et constitutionnel canadien. Son nom honore la mémoire d’un des plus grands juristes canadiens, le regretté juge en chef Bora Laskin.
Selon Sandrine Raquepas, « l’équipe revient forte de cette expérience enrichissante et surtout très fière d’avoir pu représenter McGill! »
Le Concours Wilson – 19 et 20 février 2016
“The Wilson Moot was an amazing learning and fun experience over all. As a team (Sarah de Rose, Benny Chan, Marilyn Venney, and Maria Rodriguez), we learned so much and grew so much along the way even though we did not make it to the final round. Because our official problem was based on a current and novel issue, our work was much more interesting and challenging; the law isn’t settled on the issue, there isn’t a leading case per se.
And you do not realize how invested you can get and how much work you put in. But it ends up being fun in the long run and the rewards are substantial too! We had the opportunity to plead in front of judges and practitioners who took us seriously and treated us as “real lawyers”, and we also had the opportunity to meet students from top universities who were equally excited and invested in their work. Many thanks to our coach Elizabeth Goodwin!”
La Coupe Gale – 19 et 20 février 2016
Cette année, David Suk, Eric Hendry, Gregory Elder et Vallery Bayly ont représenté McGill lors de la Coupe Gale à Toronto. Ils étaient par ailleurs accompagnés par leur entraîneur Me Alexandre Bien-Aimé (BCL/LLB’09). C’est l’équipe appellante composée de Gregory Elder et de Vallery Bayly s’est emparé du trophée de meilleure équipe, gagnant ainsi la 43e édition de la Coupe Gale!
Créé en 1974, le Concours de la Coupe Gale offre aux étudiants l’occasion de plaider l’appel d’une décision de la Cour suprême.
Le Concours Pierre-Basile-Mignault – 19 et 20 février 2016
Encadrée par Me Marie-Hélène Beaudoin et Me Marc-André Russell, et composée de Gabrielle Tremblay, Michèle Giguère, Aurélie Lanctôt et Alexandra Freedman, l’équipe mcgilloise s’est emparé de quatre trophées lors des joutes qui se tenaient cette année à l’Université de Sherbrooke.
Il s’agit de la Coupe du Bâtonnier du Québec pour la meilleure équipe, assortie d’une bourse de 1000$ (Alexandra Freedman, Aurélie Lanctôt, Gabrielle Tremblay, Michèle Giguère), la Coupe Éditions Yvon Blais pour le tandem finaliste de la joute finale, assortie d’une bourse de 500$ (Tandem intimé McGill : Gabrielle Tremblay et Michèle Giguère), la Coupe Robinson pour la meilleure plaideuse, assortie d’une bourse de 500$ (Gabrielle Tremblay) et la Coupe du Barreau canadien pour la deuxième meilleure plaideuse, assortie d’une bourse de 300$ (Michèle Giguère).
Le Concours Pierre-Basile-Mignault est une compétition de plaidoirie qui oppose les six facultés canadiennes de droit civil. L’épreuve est fondée sur un jugement fictif rendu par un tribunal de première instance en matière de droit civil. L’édition 2016 portait sur un dossier de responsabilité médicale. La finale eut lieu devant les honorables juges Jean-Louis Beaudoin, Jacques Dufresne et Claire L’Heureux-Dubé.
Selon Aurélie Lanctôt: « Nous sommes très très heureuses, mon équipe et moi, des résultats du Mignault… on n’aurait pas pu demander mieux ! »
La Coupe Guy-Guérin – 12 février 2016
L’équipe de l’Université McGill, composée de Marie-Louise Chabot et de Suzanne Zaccour, a remporté la première place lors de la Coupe Guy-Guérin. Marie-Louise Chabot a également gagné le prix pour le meilleur interrogatoire principal. Les co-équipières participeront donc à la Coupe Sopinka, qui aura lieu les 11 et 12 mars à Ottawa, où elles affronteront l’équipe de UBC dans le cadre un procès bilingue où elles représenteront la défense.
L’équipe, qui a profité des sages conseils de leur entraîneur Robert Israel, BCL/LLB’06, tient à remercier leurs amis et camarades de classe, ainsi que Michèle Lamarre-Leroux, BCL/LLB’14, et Fraser Dickson, BCL/LLB’16, qui ont par le passé représenté McGill à la Coupe Sopinka.
