A native Australian, Eliza Bateman is an impassioned lawyer and doctoral student who has worked both for the Victoria Human Rights Commission and as a senior lawyer for Victoria Legal Aid. A former president of the Graduate Law Student Association, she has helped lead the conversation at McGill about forging a meaningful career based on advanced academic work.
Montreal-native Marika Giles Samson obtained her law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School, as well as an LLM from University College London. She now works with human rights specialist Frédéric Mégret on political opposition and dissent. A busy academic who juggles multiple roles, Marika is also interim Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Kuzi Charamba obtained a Bachelor of Laws from King’s College London, a Diplôme in International, European and Comparative Law from Université de Strasbourg and a Master of Laws from McGill before deciding to embark on his DCL degree. He is interested in global governance, business and human rights, and related matters of conflict and security. His doctoral research focuses on access to remedies and the use of arbitration for victims of human rights violations perpetrated by private military and security companies.

Kudos to Stéphanie Chipeur, who received a Bombardier Award from the Legal Leaders for Diversity Trust Fund; Alejandro José Piera Valdés, whose DCL thesis won the 2016 Best Thesis Award from the Association des professeures et professeurs de droit du Québec; Sara Mahboob, who published an op-ed in The Friday Times on a decision handed down by the Supreme Court of Pakistan; and three incoming DCL students, Yi Chao, Yue Ming Yan and Di Mei, who received China Scholarship Council awards for the Fall 2016 term.
