On December 3, 2013, Dr. Nicolas Mateesco Matte, director emeritus (1976-1991) of McGill University’s Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL), celebrated his 100th birthday in the company of IASL alumni and students, and many family at the gracious home of Ann and John T. Keenan (BCL’67, LLM’69).
Current IASL Director Paul Dempsey notes that, “when Dr. Matte arrived, the IASL was going through a difficult period. Through his remarkable efforts, the Institute’s existence was weathered a financial crisis and went to flourish under his tenure. Dr. Matte has remained a strong supporter of our Institute, and a distinguished educator, scholar, and lawyer.” Professor Dempsey is also proud that last year, “the IASL alumni honoured Dr. Matte with the establishment of an endowed Fellowship in his name which will support the student designated as Editor of the Annals of Air & Space Law.”
At the reception, Dr. Matte was presented not only with a specially dedicated edition of the journal he founded in 1976, but also a wonderful cake celebrating his achievements.
Three generations of the Matte family that have been associated with McGill were at the reception: among the guests were Dr. Matte’s daughter, Anne-Karine Matte, who received her BSc from McGill in 1981, and his grandson Jordan-Nicolas, who is currently studying Political Science and International Relations, proudly following in his grandfather’s footsteps.

Nicolas Mateesco Matte
Né en Roumanie en 1913, Nicolas Mateesco Matte obtient son premier doctorat en droit de l’Université de Bucarest en 1939. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il s’installe à Paris, où il complète un doctorat en droit international de l’Université de Paris. Il émigre au Canada en 1950, à un moment où ses écrits sur le droit aérien l’avaient déjà largement fait connaître comme partisan d’un nouvel ordre juridique international, proposant une vision de la coopération transcendant les frontières géopolitiques.
De 1951 à 1968, il est professeur et titulaire de la Chaire de droit aérien de l’Université de Montréal, qui deviendra ensuite la chaire de droit aérien et spatial. Il fonde aussi le Club des relations internationales, auquel de nombreux dirigeants canadiens ont appartenu. La longue et fructueuse association du Dr Matte avec l’Institut de droit aérien et spatial de l’Université McGill a commencé en 1961, quand il est nommé professeur invité. En 1976, il en devient le directeur et il fonde les Annales de droit aérien et spatial, la publication phare de l’Institut.
En plus de sa carrière universitaire, le professeur Matte a également été un citoyen engagé. Il a contribué au développement de la ville de Brossard, comme en fait foi un boulevard portant son nom. Il a été commissaire pour les groupes ethniques de la Commission d’enquête sur la situation de la langue française et des droits linguistiques au Québec en 1968. Il est également l’un des fondateurs du Cosmodôme, un musée des sciences à Laval qui a été inauguré en 1994.
Les honneurs qui ont été conférés au professeur Matte incluent le Prix Edward Warner de l’OACI – l’équivalent du prix Nobel pour le secteur de l’aviation – le prix Crystal Helmet et l’Ordre du Canada. Il est également Chevalier de l’Ordre du Québec, membre de la Société royale du Canada et Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur de France.
