Almost one month into the fall semester, the Faculty is a bustling place, crackling with energy and crammed with exciting events for students, alumni and the whole McGill community to enjoy. Like bright red apples ripening in our local orchards, here are a few hand-picked events coming this fall to the Faculty of Law.
Mary Eberts delivers 2013 Wallenberg Conference
On September 25, the Faculty was pleased to welcome Mary Eberts for the 2013 Wallenberg Lecture, entitled “Law vs. Justice: How the Courts are preparing the way for one last, fatal, round of treaty negotiations with Indigenous Peoples in Canada.”
A co-founder of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund and long-time litigation counsel for the Native Women’s Association of Canada, Me Eberts writes and lectures on constitutional and Charter law, Indigenous law, and human rights. After completing her term as Ariel F. Sallows Chair in Human Rights at the University of Saskatchewan in 2013, Eberts became counsel at Hensel Barristers, a Toronto-based firm representing First Nations, their members, and Indigenous organizations in litigation proceedings.
The Wallenberg Conference is a series of lectures in honour of Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat whose actions saved the lives of thousands of Jews in Hungary during the Second World War. The previous lecture in this series, by American Civil Liberties Association President Susan N. Herman, was described in our March 2012 issue of Focus Online.
Disability, Human Rights and the Law
Building on the success of last year’s inaugural seminars on disability, human rights and the law, the Faculty’s Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism now presents a second set, entitled “Global perspectives on disability, human rights and accessing justice.” This year’s series will kick off on October 2, with a teaching seminar on “Human Rights and Inclusive Development: Integrating the Disability Perspective.” Open to students, lawyers and the larger community, the lunchtime events are held in the Stephen Scott Seminar Room (room 16). Lunch is provided, as are two hours of continuing legal education, as accredited by the Quebec Bar. There will be one more event this fall, “Mental Health Disabilities and Access to Justice: Recognizing and Reinforcing Capacity,” on November 6, then two more in the new year. Law Homecoming Weekend Oct 17-19
Ne manquez pas le Weekend des retrouvailles à la Faculté de droit du 17 au 19 octobre 2013. À l’affiche cette année: une soirée Coffeehouse le jeudi 17 octobre, de 17 h à 20 h, suivie du Petit-déjeuner du doyen le lendemain matin. Les conventums pour les promotions dont l’année se termine par ‘3’ et par ‘8’ seront au menu, ainsi que la course Osler sur le Mont Royal le samedi matin — rendez-vous à 9 h devant le Centre sportif (Currie Gym).
Parmi les activités des Retrouvailles de 2013, il y aura une conférence d’une journée pour célébrer le 40e anniversaire de la Clinique d’information juridique à McGill. La conférence, intitulée « Justice sociale et éducation juridique, un partenariat au-delà des frontières », explorera le thème de l’expérience clinique juridique, et inclura, entre autres, une allocution d’ouverture de Me Michael Bergman, fondateur de la CIJM, sur la Clinique et sa contribution à la communauté de McGill et de Montréal. Le programme est agréé par le Barreau du Haut-Canada pour 5 heures portant sur le professionnalisme et 2 heures portant sur le droit de fond, et accrédité par le Barreau du Québec pour 6 heures de formation juridique continue. Une Pensée d’avance – Think Ahead
La Faculté de droit est fière d’offrir cinq conférences de formation continue accréditées par le Barreau et la Chambre des notaires du Québec. La 5e édition du cycle « Une pensée d’avance – Think Ahead » reprendra au mois d’octobre 2013. La thématique du cycle de 2013-2014 est « La réforme de la justice civile : la fin de la crise ? » Soyez parmi nous le 22 octobre 2013, pour la première conférence de la série, intitulée « Le nouveau Code de procédure civile : aperçu et éléments clés », qui sera présentée par le Professeur Frédéric Bachand et Mes François Fontaine et Doug Mitchell. Le 19 novembre, la deuxième conférence offrira les perspectives des Professeurs Fabien Gélinas et Geneviève Saumier et de l’Honorable Louise Otis sur « La privatisation de la justice civile ». Il y aura également trois conférences de formation continue pendant la session d’hiver, en janvier, février et mars 2014. Les inscriptions en ligne débuteront le jeudi 26 septembre. Two Major Conferences in Air and Space Law
Following their Fourth ICAO/McGill University Pre-Assembly Symposium, which was held September 21 to 22 at the ICAO Headquarters in Montreal, the McGill University Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL) will be putting on a second major conference this fall.
The fifth annual McGill Conference on International Aviation Liability & Insurance, held October 25 to 26 at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure, will gather together some of the world’s leading experts to review the contemporary laws, jurisprudence and developments in International Air Law and Liability Insurance. The event has been accredited by the Barreau du Québec for 13.25 hours of continuing legal education for jurists.
