Simone Cavanaugh nommée au Conseil jeunesse du Canada
Le 25 janvier 2017, le premier ministre Justin Trudeau a annoncé la nomination de 11 jeunes Canadiens qui ont fait preuve de leadership comme membres de son Conseil jeunesse. Parmi eux, signalons notre étudiante Simone Cavanaugh, qui termine actuellement sa dernière année d’études en droit.
Composé de personnes issues de diverses collectivités, représentant toutes les régions du Canada et possédant un large éventail de connaissances et d’expériences, le Conseil jeunesse aura pour mission de fournir des avis au premier ministre sur des questions nationales, comme l’emploi, l’accès à l’éducation, le renforcement des collectivités, les changements climatiques et la croissance durable, entre autres.
Law Needs Feminism Because campaign goes national
When it kicked off in 2016 with 33 portraits, the McGill Law Feminist Collective’s Law Needs Feminism Because (LNFB) photo campaign garnered a lot of media attention from across the country. Now the initiative is going national: Law schools across the country are currently organizing their own photoshoots and gearing up 
to participate in a concerted national social media campaign (with the #LNFB hashtag) during the month of February. The hope is to gather portraits, captions and stories from law students and legal professionals to imagine solutions on how to shape the legal profession of tomorrow. All this will culminate in a national forum to be held in Montreal’s Old Port on March 11, 2017.
For this reason, the LNFB team is raising funds and invites you to join them for their Mingle & Jingle coffeehouse on February 2, 2017 (16:30-19:30, Atrium, Chancellor Day Hall), where those interested can have their photo taken, and contribute their own answer on why law needs feminism recorded for posterity (with donation). You can also support them via their Seeds of Change campaign.
At the #LNFB National Forum (see event on Facebook) in March, the organizing team plans to weave together digital content and gather contributors to create tangible recommendations for changing the legal landscape around the themes of feminist legal mentorship, student experience, alternative legal careers, and legal recruitment. Daughters of the vote
On March 7 and 8, BCL/LLB students Lana Belber, Simone Cavanaugh and Sara Gold, and recent graduate Suzanne Zaccour, will be participating as delegates to Daughters of the Vote, an historic event celebrating the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Canada.
On March 7 and 8, 2017, Canada’s House of Commons will be filled by young women to mark International Women’s Day. The 338 participants (one per federal riding) will attend a series of leadership workshops and events on Parliament Hill, and visit their respective National Assemblies. The objective of the initiative is to ensure that emerging young women leaders become familiar with Canada’s political institutions, so they are equipped and inspired to participate in the formal political sphere in the years and decades to come.
