Le 6 février dernier, la réception annuelle du Comité consultatif des jeunes diplômé.e.s de Montréal a connu un franc succès! L’énergie était palpable dans l’air de l’atrium du pavillon Chancellor-Day alors qu’étudiant.e.s et diplômé.e.s récent.e.s profitaient de l’occasion pour retrouver leurs camarades de classe et pour tisser de nouveaux liens. Young Alumni Board Chair John Lennard, BCL/LLB’11, shared inspiring words with his colleagues before introducing special guest Dean Robert Leckey. Lennard then moderated a candid and engaging discussion between special guests Kendra Alexia Hefti, BCL/LLB’16, Blockchain Tax Lead at Deloitte; and Alexandre Shee, BCL/LLB’11, Head of the Office of the CEO and a Director of Corporate Development at Element AI. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event an unqualified success!

Cette proche d’Emmanuel Macron s’est vue confier en mars dernier un rapport de lutte contre la haine en ligne, qui devrait prochainement donner lieu à une loi.
Laetitia Avia, LLM’13, est avocate en droit des affaires. Née en Seine-Saint-Denis, dans une famille originaire du Togo (son père est chauffeur bagagiste en aéroport, sa mère sage-femme), c’est par l’éducation qu’elle emprunte l’ascenseur social. Grâce aux conventions d’éducation prioritaire, elle intègre Science Po Paris, où elle obtient un master en droit économique, puis un master en droit comparé de l’université McGill à Montréal. Aide médicale à mourir: pourquoi recourir aux tribunaux?

Le 16 janvier, plusieurs ordres professionnels ont publié une lettre demandant au gouvernement du Québec de soumettre à la Cour d’appel du Québec la question de la constitutionnalité de la loi fédérale sur l’aide médicale à mourir entrée en vigueur en 2016. Selon eux, il faut s’assurer de la conformité du cadre juridique actuel de l’aide médicale à mourir (AMM) aux principes énoncés par la Cour suprême du Canada dans l’arrêt Carter en 2015.
Cette demande fait suite à la médiatisation des affaires de Nicole Gladu et de Jean Truchon, deux personnes souffrant d’une manière intolérable « de problèmes de santé graves et irrémédiables », mais à qui l’AMM a été refusée au Québec. Lire la suite…

On Monday 24 September, the United Kingdom’s Department responsible for Brexit published three notices: “Aviation safety if there is no Brexit deal”; “Aviation security if there is no Brexit deal”; and “Flights to and from the UK if there’s no Brexit deal”.
For someone who is intimately familiar with international air traffic rights, the last notice which deals with UK-EU flights in a post hard Brexit scenario should cause concern. Quite simply, absent significant hard work, there may be far fewer flights between the UK and points in the European Union after Brexit on 29 March 2019. Open science can significantly influence the development and translational process of precision medicine in Canada. Precision medicine presents a unique opportunity to improve disease prevention and healthcare, as well as to reduce health-related expenditures. However, the development of precision medicine also brings about economic challenges, such as costly development, high failure rates, and reduced market size in comparison with the traditional blockbuster drug development model. Open science, characterized by principles of open data sharing, fast dissemination of knowledge, cumulative research, and cooperation, presents a unique opportunity to address these economic challenges while also promoting the public good. Annamaria Enenajor, only 34 and already a partner at Clayton Ruby’s famously progressive law firm, is working to change that. She’s gathered a group of academics, activists and entrepreneurs to help push the government for full pardons and the erasure of records for personal possession. News of Tamara Thermitus’s (LLM’13) resignation last week as head of Quebec’s embattled human rights and youth rights commission had been a long time coming. Dogged by accusations of poor management and abuse of power, Thermitus was reportedly about to be removed from her position by the National Assembly.
